Self Motivation & Positive Attitude
Staying Fired up
How to Fuel Motivation?
The kind of motivation that lasts is motivation that comes from within. People do things for their own reasons and not yours. When they are convinced on the inside, only then will the motivation last.
Motivation is just like a fire, you stop adding fuel to it, it will die. Just like exercise and food do not last long, neither does motivation. However, if the basis of motivation is trust in inner values, it becomes long lasting. Here is how to trigger motivation in yourself. The kind that will take you over the long haul.
Believe in Something big
Stop and think how you’d like to be remembered. Will you be remembered with love and respect? Will you be missed? How would you like to be remembered as a parent, a child, an employer, employee, a brother, a sister? Will people say you were a rascal or a crook or someone who made a difference? What is your legacy?
Activity – How to Fuel Motivation?
- If you knew you had 6 months to live, how would you live your life?
- What would you do differently
- What would you change in your personal life?
- What would you change in your work life?
- What tasks would you prioritize?
- What dreams would you try to make happen?
Solution to the above activity
A question like this forces you to look at the higher purpose of your life. There is a lot of motivation in a higher cause. Only when you commit to something bigger than yourself, will you know just how empowering a purpose in life is. Till you do it, you won’t know it.
Higher Purpose Of Your Life
Somewhere in those answers lies meaning. The higher purpose of your life. Now is the time to set your priorities in order. Tomorrow may be too late. There is a lot of motivation in a higher cause. Only when you commit to something bigger than yourself, will you know just how empowering a purpose in life is. Till you do it, you won’t know it
Story of the “Peace Dynamite”
100 years ago a man read his name in the obituary. Mistakenly, they thought he was dead. Horror was followed by curiosity. What were people saying about him now that he was dead. The obituary said: “Dynamite King dies, the merchant of death is no more.” Stunned the man realised this was not the way he wanted to be remembered.
It was a turning point in his life. From that day onwards he decided to dedicate his life towards peace
This was the story of Alfred Nobel. He is now finally remembered for the Nobel peace prize.
Natural Laws at Work
This is especially important to remember when you feel discouraged. All things in life follow the law of sowing and reaping. What you plant, nurture and water, will flower. For every effect there is a cause.
Create Balance in your life
Our life is like a wheel with six spokes: family, financial, physical, spiritual, mental, and social. Even if one snaps, the wheel loses its shape. Each spoke needs to be in balance for a meaningful life
Achievers and Failures
Choose the company you keep
Associate with winners. You do become the company you keep. If you want to soar like an eagle, you have to learn the ways of an eagle. If you associate with achievers you will become like them whereas, if you associate with thinkers you will become like them. If you associate with givers you will become one. If you associate your self who always complains, then you will also become like them.
A person’s character is not always judged by the company he keeps, But is also judged by the company that he avoids.
Learn to like what you have to do anyway
Some things simply need to be done. One of the secrets of successful people is that they form the habit of doing things that failures don’t like to do and won’t do.
Failures don’t like discipline, hard work or keeping commitments. Successful people also dislike discipline and hard work (no athlete wants to get up and train at the crack of dawn everyday) but they do it anyway. They have formed the habit of doing the things failures don’t like to do.
- Make a list of all your negative habits
- Make a list of habits you want to develop
Now visualize yourself with your new habits. Anything we practice long enough becomes ingrained in our system and becomes a habit. Cultivating a habit is like plowing the field. It takes time. Inspiration is what gets a person started, motivation is what keeps him on the track and habit is what makes it automatic.
Powerful thought by St Francis of Assisi
“Start by doing what is necessary, then what is possible and suddenly you are doing the impossible.”
